Nina Ground Achi is an all-natural soup thickener made from finely ground achi seeds, a traditional ingredient used widely in West African cooking. Popular for its mild flavor and excellent thickening properties, this 2oz (57g) pack contains no additives or preservatives and is ideal for preparing rich and hearty soups and stews. 


Recipe: Achi Soup

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs goat meat or beef

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • 4 cups water

  • ¼ cup achi powder

  • 2 tbsp ground crayfish

  • ½ cup smoked fish (e.g., tilapia or mackerel)

Instructions:

  1. Combine meat, onions, and water in a pot. Bring to a boil and simmer for 20 minutes.

  2. Once meat is tender, add ground crayfish and stir.

  3. Add smoked fish and continue simmering for another 5 minutes.

  4. Gradually stir in achi powder until soup thickens to your desired consistency.

  5. Simmer for 3–5 more minutes, then serve hot with fufu, rice, or yam.


What Achi is Called in Other African Countries:

  • Nigeria: Ofe Achi (Achi Soup)

  • Democratic Republic of Congo: Dika Na

  • Cameroon: Sometimes associated with Mbanga soup if thickened with seeds

  • Sierra Leone/Liberia: Used but often referred to generically as “thickener”
